New Exhibit

We are always looking for new and innovative ways to inspire kids and adults to think about science and technology as a challenge that is full of fun. Our exhibit floor has over 40 hands-on activities to help achieve this goal, but new exhibits to replace the old-timers are always in various levels of planning and implementation. Here is a new exhibit "on the floor", but still in a development and testing stage.

Keva Planks

HSC welcomes "KEVA planks", a new component of our in-progress STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) exhibit at Headwaters Science Center. KEVA planks combine imagination with engineering and construction skills using simple planks of wood. No electricity or batteries and no LCD monitor. Great fun for the whole family. Thank you MindWare Toys in Roseville MN for the donation!

Quotable Quote for June:

"I love HSC. I love the people, the exhibits, the programs, the animals, I love the spirit of the place. Keep up the great work".

Hello Friend,

The computers are humming, the phones are ringing and we are ready for you and the big blast of activity in June and into the summer.

School is out and families will come from far and wide to participate in summer programs, a huge picnic in the street called Playful Elements - the last in a series of fundraisers - and hands-on science fun all summer long.

Please join us.
Playful Elements

Update

Thanks to a great fundraising committee, "Playful Elements", the street picnic and associated fun and games on Saturday June 22nd in Bemidji, is moving right along. So far we have seven business sponsors donating food, supplies and other services, a group of  volunteers (more are needed) and the makings of a great raffle!

This is a free public event. Fourth Street between Beltrami Ave. and Minnesota Ave. will be closed to traffic for the day. Fun will begin at 11:00 am and end at 3:00 pm. Lunch (free will offering) will be served from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.

The raffle includes:
  • First Prize -  $1000 cash
  • Second Prize -  a 17-foot Old Town canoe,  Discovery 174
  • Third Prize -  a Brinkmann gas/charcoal grill and smoker
Raffle tickets are available from June 19 through August 31, 2013. They can be purchased at the picnic, at HSC, or from any HSC board member for $10.00 each.   The drawing will be held on August 31, 2013 at HSC.  You do not need to be present to win.

Behind the Logo

hsc logoDid you ever wonder what the Headwaters Science Center's logo represents?

The main image is the North Star. Seen only in the northern hemisphere, it depicts a sense of direction and importance. All other stars revolve around it; only the North Star appears to stay put – forever.
A water drop is in the center. Water is a requirement for life and a basic theme of Headwaters Science Center. The water drop is divided into three parts depicting the major watersheds within the HSC service area: Upper Mississippi, Rainy River and Red River. The term headwaters is part of the HSC name, showing its important location in the Upper Mississippi Watershed.
The logo was designed by Triad Marketing and Advertising of Nisswa, MN in 1993 under the direction of Jim and Laddie Elwell.
We are excited to be part of your family activities this summer. Look for new hands-on science exhibits and a variety of programs for all ages. We encourage you to forward this Newsletter to friends and relatives.

Sound You Can See!

You can hear and feel sound waves, but not see them. Right? Well, our new exhibit changes all of that. Sprinkle some sand on the flat surface, press a button, adjust the dials for frequency and amplitude of your choice and "see" the sound waves as the sand is distributed into interesting patterns.

Thanks to Erik Truedson for developing this exhibit for HSC.

Elegance Coral Showing Off

Yet another great photo by Mark Lewer from the salt water reef tank at Headwaters Science Center.

This is an Elegance Coral. Normally the tube-like tentacles (which discharge nematocytes or stinging cells) are extended and wave in the current searching for food, but here they are at rest and pulled into sac-like structures filled with water, exposing the mouth and other body parts of the animal. With a little imagination flavored with curiosity you can see the caricature of a human skeleton under there. Right?
